    Default Overhead mic question

Ok so i'm fairly new to the whole mic'ing thing and I was wondering what some suggestions would be for over head mics, or cymbal mics.

My setup right now consists of the standard tom mics/clips and sm57's for my hihat and snares. But I'm missing cymbal mics or overheads. I'm really not going to studio quality just something to liven up the cymbals in the audience.

    Thanks ahead for the opinions..

these are really good mics for the price (i would get 2 at least)
    they have a large condenser
and a narrow polar pattern so that they wont pick up alot of snare/ tom bleed
they work excellent on hi-hats as well
(better than a 57 because of the narrower pattern)

if your in a bind for cash you could probably get away with two or three of these

not gunna have the best quality but they will do the trick for sure
    yet again
really tight polar pattern so that theres little bleed over

    iwhats your price range?

I'm not really worried about price (within reason) I want to get the best sound possible. I spent many many days testing and playing cymbals to get the sound I wanted. Now I want to project that sound the best I can.

I was looking at the e614's and was pretty impressed with the reviews any opinions?

to be honest anything by sennhheiser is usually a good mic (count out their kick mics though)
my absolute favorite mic for not only overheads and specific cymbals
but also guitar cabinets, vocals, acoustic anythings, and rack toms is the akg c 414 but if your looking for a really good sound that is still in reason you can go with a large diaphragm condenser mic
just for the sake of god
    dont buy a ribbon microphone
if you accidentally decide to flip on the phantom power you will blow a mic to shreds

now are you going to be supplying the cables
    if so
    dont skimp
its amazing how much hum intereference there can be from bad cables
    and let me tell you
thats the biggest pain in the *** ever when attempting to fix it and live with what we have

    in short
    tune your drums
    talk to the sound engineer
    try and help
    he will be happy
which will make your show sound great

    afterall
drums are the hardest instrument to mic
    BY FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    keep it rockin fellas

I've found the best way to get the perfect sound you want, is to buy a small, cheap, powered mixer, that way, you can create your own mix/balance of drums, cymbals, kick etc. So just plug all of your mic's into your mixer, mix it to how you want, and then just get the soundman to feed your mixer into the main PA of the gig.

I have 2 CAD condenser mic's and I really enjoy them, specially for what i am doing, which sounds like what you are wanting to do with them.

    Default overhead mic

I use two akg c 1000s mic's for overhead, they are great in the studio and even better on live gigs, they also have a 9volt battery slot that produces its own phantom should you have a board with no phantom power. They aint cheap but they are fantastic, in fact one of them has been dropped from a quite a high stage and it works flawlessly.
I would recommend trying to get one from a Pa/ rental company if cost is an issue. you cannot kill them.

I didn't want to start a new thread for my question, i will apologize for
butting in here but it does seem to fit. What is the best set up for
mic'ing congas and other hand drums for a live show?

    Cool Overhead/conga mic question

Hey, Jack--when I play congas and bongos at my church, the group leader uses an AKG cardioid mike which is placed near the bongos, but picks up both the bongos and the congas, as well as my vocals.

In this picture, I'm seated much as I am when I'm playin' indoors...it's not shown in this picture, but picture the mike on a stand between and slightly above the bongo heads. (They'd be directly in front of the bongos!) As I said, it picks up the bongo sounds, the congas, and my vocals (indoors, there are two directionals above and in front of the guitar group that helps pick up our vocals...

    hopes this helps ya, bro'!

I am glad you said what you did about the AT3032 mics because I have looked in to those but was not sure about them. I may go ahead and take the leap now.
