If the head is mesh it could grab at the felt beater when you hit the drum and pull it apart over time. Danmar or Gibraltar wood beaters would probably work for you.
Hi all,
I'm planning on using remo silent strokes on my first kit thanks to apartment living. And while I've been waiting for it to get here, I've been reading around and I've seen some posts out there talking about the use of wood or plastic beater heads with the mesh heads like the silent strokes instead of felt.
So, long story short, I'm wondering if this is true, and if so, any reccomendations for a replacement for the felt head that'll presumably come with the hadware pack I bought? It's an inexpensive SP set, for anyone wondering.
Thanks for reading!
I've also been told to not use a felt beater on a mesh head. wears the head out quicker...1 of my beaters has felt, wood and plastic..I've been using the plastic one for more than a year, head seems ok still/
Ya.. what russ said. felt beaters wear down the mesh quickly. use a plastic beater
Too Much Stuff.
I'll add it to my list of random small things I need to pick up, then. Thanks guys!
yeah I used some felt beaters and tore a hole through my mesh head instantly.
They make big fluffy cotton looking beaters you should look into those.
See I gave up on the bass drum mesh and use one of these
Works much better and I haven't destroyed it yet.
Is that just a practice kick head essentially? Or am I missing something?
Because of it's that simple, I'll have to check it out for sure.
Mesh heads will eat up a felt beater. Anything but felt will work on your mess head.

I used a felt beater on a mesh head for about 8 mo... basically the mesh head acted lik a cheese grater... wore out the head and the beater.
I use wooden sticks on my mesh drum heads... so why not use a hard surface beater on my drum peddle?
Considering what happens when the beater impacts the mesh head (cheese grater effect on felt) is all the consideration one needs to realize which beater is the best choice for mesh heads....
