    Default Broken arm

I broke my right arm last friday. cracked two bones near the elbow. going to a bone specialist today to get a cast. the doc in the er said it looks like 4 to 6 weeks recovery time. hopefully after that i'll still have full motion. We shall see. if not i'll probably hang it up and sell the kit, but lets not jump ahead.....

Your body can repair itself and will likely come out of this in good shape.
    Let's not jump ahead.

Having said that..................sorry to hear the news.

You broke an arm...you didn't lose it to a bandsaw! I'm sure you'll heal like a champ! Plus, Don't discount physical therapy! Good luck and speedy recovery!

FWIW...You could take this opportunity to work on your left hand (assuming that's your weaker hand).

I've broken my hand 3 times and my arm once, all right side. Healed up good as new each time. If your doctor prescribes physical therapy, make sure you do it consistently, to make sure you get full range of motion back.

I snapped my arm in half, two titanium plates and eight screws, surgery went bad and had 3 corrective surgeries after that.

I'm still playing... I can't move my left wrist anymore and only have 40% movement back in my left hand but aint nothing and nobody stopping me from doing what I love most. Playing my drums....

You can pull through this if I can.

Ouch. What happened? It shouldn't stop you from drumming. You could go Rick Allen style.

Dude, I'm sorry to hear this, but like the others have said... this isn't necessarily a curtain call for your drumming.

In addition to our DC friends' stories of their injures, I have one to share...

Les Paul had shattered his right arm and elbow in a near-fatal automobile accident when he was 33 years old. The Dr said that they could not rebuild his elbow, and he should consider amputation. Instead, Les insisted that his arm was set at a 90* angle so he could still cradle and pick the guitar. It took him nearly a year and a half to recover but he did and played well into his 90's.

I was going to suggest that. A girl on my daughter's hockey team broke hand and she asked the doctor to set it in a way that she could slip the stick in there and play with it taped and padded.

Not making fun of your situation, just pointing out that there are ways around these things.

I have a plate in my left hand that limits my grip--which actually helps me play some things better with my left hand. Hope your arm heals without residual problems.

What a bummer, I'm sure you returning to playing is on your mind, your going to be fine, think positive, a little rehab and you'll be up and running in no time.

Sorry to hear about the arm. While very discouraging right now, give yourself some time before panicking about playing the drums. There's lots a great stories on this thread about fellow drummers with bad breaks in the hands / arms that have made great comebacks. Hang in there!

    Seconding this!

Years ago, I dislocated my shoulder. Had to have the arm in a sling, no activity, blah blah blah.

After about two weeks, I took the foolish sling off and started playing drums again. BIG mistake. Still paying for it upon occasion, 30 years later.

Do what the docs tell you, and you'll be fine. I do agree with another poster, use this time to work on your off hand. Good luck! (And I agree, its an awful feeling....)

I luckily never broke my bones but I had 3 tendinitises (?)
The last one I had was on early 2013, I just bought myself a practice pad and hit it the wrong way so I felt like something in my shoulder, arm and hand destroyed.

I had physical therapy but it makes (past version of the word) it even more worse so I had to stop it.

From then it was becoming better and getting worse and getting better and getting worse and getting better until in early 2014 when i took drum lessons and it still was hurting a bit but it was healing.

A few weeks later it didn't hurt anymore but if my teacher touched my arm with the tip of the stick it burned for a minute.

I still had burning and numb sensation in my shoulder and arm but it was getting better and better after I quit my awful lessons and started developing technique.

In the meantime it actually doesn't hurts only very rarely a short burn but not from drumming.

Update: they gave me a removable cast. Reason being i need to take it off every day and move/bend my arm and wrist. I'm 3 weeks in now and the arm feels pretty good. My wrist however is not to good. still swollen and quite painful but they say a sprain can be worse then a break. I go back to the Doc oct 11th. hoping to get back to work to do some one haneded painting this week.

I almost have the wife convinced i need a 24" kick drum to add to my kit for my pain and suffering. lol I really miss being able to play.

Glad to hear the healing is going well! If you play the 'pain & suffering' card long enough, that 24" kick is yours, for sure!

Update: Went in for an x-ray and exam yesterday. 5 weeks in. things are healing up nicely, new bone is forming around the break. The Doc said to only wear my cast at work, also said I can do some light drumming.. woo hoo

I admit I freaked out a bit back when this happened because of where the break was, right at my elbow , however it appears there will be no problem playing at all.

Great news! How's that new, 24" kick treating you?
