    Default Mangini -- short solo

I've seen him do the same on smaller kits.
This set-up is the "Big Show" requirement he plays for Dream Theater.........
Notice that he doesn't play hard..............firm but not hard.
Heads appear to be single ply.
Such amazing technical ability combined with feel..................

I've said it before I'll say it again... I just don't understand his setup.

Why do you want to reach for the moon to play your octobons and cymbals.

I get that he probably does it so that you can actually "SEE" the drummer.
But there's got to be a better way.

I have to assume it is simply just how Petrucci wants the show to go...........

I, like you, prefer an ergonomic arrangement............my crash cymbal heights are slightly over or under my line of sight.

Disregarding the set configuration, the man has some chops.

Mike Portnoy didn't set his up like that.
Petrucci had no influence on his monsters

I lose interest when they get past 2 BD's.

Judging from the few times I've seen him, he's a fast talker, doesn't say much, but a fast talker.

He even fast-talked his way on to the faculty at Berklee !

Maybe this has interest...............Smaller kit; even lighter touch:

He's an incredible drummer but his solos don't really appeal to me. Once in a while he has some fast bursts but other then that, he just plays a straight beat.

Showmanship more than anything, I guess.

Berklee! The fact that he's been on the faculty for over 10 years is impressive.

I have sat here for about the last 2+ hours watching Mangini play. I cannot deny his speed, but I didn't hear anything interesting. Fast as hell...yes, interesting.......not at all.

What Mangini can do with a pair of sticks and a drum kit is simply astounding. However, whilst I sit open-mouthed at his abilities, there's something missing that I can't put my finger on. It's almost like he's too perfect. Every hit is measured, perfectly in time and perhaps sounds a little robotic. The fact a human has been able to reach this level of 'perfection' is probably what is the most incredible thing about Mangini. But, it seems, this comes at a cost; a lack of feel and fluidity which is possibly why I prefer listening to Dream Theater's older tracks with Portnoy on drums.

I agree with Spaz, octatabons and cymbals out of reach. This doesn't make any sense pretty good solo I can dig it. It must be for the live shows

I don't hear that much difference in their styles. I've seen both guys live with DT, and Mangini did a great job on the older material.
Bigger deal breaker for me is that Mangini is quite a nice guy and very approachable while Portnoy, let's just say, not so much.
    Proudly playing:
    Doc Sweeney Drums
    A bunch of snares
    A bunch of cymbals

    Off-Set double pedals

I think I love to play the drums simply because you get to hit 'em!!!

In my eyes and ears :
Portnoy is amazing in that his speed never compromises his power; his ability to master both is over-the-top impressive.
Mangini is also an expert technician but usually uses less force.

I'm sure this is a horrible generalization but...............
Portnoy plays more percussively while Mangini plays more musically.

    Personality wise, you are spot-on.

I knew Mike Portnoy on a first name basis I've met him numerous times.
He was always a great guy towards me.
He even went outside and called out for my mom to bring her backstage at a show one time when I mentioned she was outside and she bought my ticket as a gift. He was awesome that day and I can't thank him enough for allowing her backstage with the band.

I don't know either of them so cannot comment albeit Mangini does seem to come across very well.

Back to drumming, the difference is basically the differing approaches to drumming. Mangini has a sense of power through being very direct and precise. Portnoy seems to be based more on feel. I prefer the latter but appreciate both.

Mangini rules. I also don't get the set up. But I'm amazed at how quickly he can get his hands up to those cymbals and octos. Crazy.

Portnoy rules too, for the record.

If you pause the video you will see they are not at all out of reach. his arms are bent at a 90% angle when he plays them, he's not struggling to reach them in any way.
