Metal.............always had them!
Love the warmth of wood.

Why choose? I go with both - tight metal as my primary, then a low thuddy wood on the outside of the hihats.
I love my Acrolites, but I have been seriously eyeing that DW Design Series Black Nickle over Brass. It's under $300 and that Mag Throw off is very nice.
I love a good maple snare drum but lately I'm hooked on a 7X13 Black Magic.
Gretsch USA & Zildjian(What Else Would I Ever Need ?)
Both. Depends on many things.
Both are nice and have their place, but I believe a metal snare is more all purpose. Seems to have a bit more projection and seem to handle all styles well.
all the best...
I'm favoring maple these days but I also love the sound of brass ...
When I play out I tend to use a metal snare as it's louder and cuts thru the mix better.
But I do have some wood snares that are real ear bleeders and compete hand to hand with the metal snares but I don't use them because I worry about them on the road lol
But when I'm recording I prefer a wood snare for the nice thick tones.
I have 3 snares of different sizes.
1 MCX Masters maple 14x6.5 which I use very little.
Pearl Sensitone 14x5.5 steel
and my favorite that I use all the time
Vintage Slingerland " Festival" 14x5 with internal muffler and stick saver hoops.
Tends to be a personal preference...most of my snares are wood, but i do have a hammered brass snare, great one. As mentioned previously, I think metal ones do tend to be louder, but I also have some good ear bleeding wood ones...good luck on your quest for the holy snare!
Maple is great for.........let me see.......................syrup.
As for snares, give me metal any day.
14x8 black nickel over brass. It's a corker. A big, loud, deep gunshot of a snare.

I sorta have both in one, a 14" X 5" Edge. It's more of an overall wood drum as the core of the shell is 10 ply maple but what attracted me is the brass bearing edges. It doesn't ring like a metal shell but open, played off-center it has a ton af charcter and sounds almost vintage-ish. A 1/2 pc of gel and played nearer center it dries right up.
My first snare was a Supraphonic but was stolen. That would be a perfect compliment.
I also have a 14" X 5.5" Fibes acrylic which isn't bad at all but won't be discussed here.
I normally prefer wood, however I recently bought a Tama 14" SLP Super Aluminum snare and with an Aquarian Coated FocusX batter it sounds very much like a wood snare except with a bit more attack and character on rim shots. I'm very happy with it!
I don't know...I have an old 8x14" Tama Rockstar, birch-snare that I really love. I also have a 8x14" acrylic snare that sounds awesome.
As for metal-snares, I've never been a fan of them. Except maybe for the Pearl Tico Torres free floating. They don't make 'em anymore but man, that snare rocks.
Next snare will probably be a Dixon hand-hammered bronze. The sounds from that snare is amazing. I don't know, maybe I'm changing my preferences as I get older...
System of Power
metal for me I think. It's hard to decide though. Have recorded with both and both sound pretty good under studio mics.
my snares
7x14 Tama Artstar birch
6.5x14 Pearl Free Floating brass
6.5x14 Ludwig Black Magic steel
5.5x14 Yamaha Concert copper (my newest one and whoa!!! copper has a nice sound, very dry, rim shots sound awesome off copper)
