I think for a crack, you want at least the top head tuned as tight as you can. That should produce a nice dry sound. You can also tune the resonant head quite tight, and it will produce a more pronounced and shorter sound, little resonance though. And then I guess you could fiddle about with the snares for a bit.

I think that might help (or lead you off in a completely different tangent, lol). It's the closest I've got to a crack on my snare drum, so...
