Started this 12" snare this week. Butternut is the wood, it is extremely soft, only took about 12 minutes to turn down the inner and outer shell. Thought some sunshine for the finish would brighten up the stage.
6" deep, very thin 5/16" stave shell construction.

Awesome. I like how you put the darker color in the middle instead of the outside edges. Almost a reverse burst. I bet it will look even better assembled.

Thanks, I wanted a ying yang match to this one. Playing with this one last summer this snare stood out over everything on the stage.

That's cool too, but I think I like the new one better. It "pops" more, IMO. And it's unique. So, how soft is Butternut? Like Poplar or Basswood?

It shapes and sands a lot like walnut but A lot quicker. I would guess it to be 500 on the Janka scale. Maple is around 1450, Elm is around 850 I think, Basswood is probably about 500 but does not sand nicely like this does. Here is a shot showing the inside.

Wow. Beautiful (and dark) grain patterns! That might make a nice hybrid with some straight grained Oak or something.

Maybe a birds eye Maple inlay around the center...
