I've noticed a lot of pro drummers going to larger sizes. I can't remember who it is, but I read an article recently about a pro rock drummer who uses 20 and 22 inch rides as crash cymbals.

I know a local guy that uses those. His rig is so loud.. the cymbals are so abrasive 21's or 22's .... seems like overkill but they sound great for their music style

I've never heard a crash over 18" that sounded good.
I use my Zildjian 21 Sweet ride as a crash once in a while. I mean it is a crash/ride cmbal.
I guess it depends on the application. I’ve really grown to love my 13” hats. If it sounds good, it is good. Doesn’t matter the size. If you mic your drums, then no reason you can’t use whatever size hats & cymbals you want....as long as the fundamental pitch sounds good.

"Too many crappy used drum stuff to list"
Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!
"I think that feeling is a lot more important than technique. It's all very well doing a triple paradiddle - but who's going to know you've done it? If you play technically you sound like everybody else. It's being original that counts." ~ John Bonham
I would never worry about who uses what or what size they use because it's all about the song and the individual making your own voice.
I just watched the Foo Fighters and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers documentaries and while Dave Grohl's and Stan Lynch's rack toms look ridiculously big but you can't argue with the sound.

I went to a Jeff Hamilton jazz clinic a few months ago and he plays a bop kit with a 18" kick, 12" rack tom and 14" floor tom but his crash cymbals were actually ride cymbals (20" and 22"). His opinion, "Any good ride is crashable". That being said, I don't think size really matters as long as it fits the genre.

Jeff's set up:
1 x Crescent 14" Hammertone Hi Hat Cymbals by Sabian - 755/1191g
1 x Crescent 20" Hammertone Ride Cymbal by Sabian - 1641g
1 x Crescent 22" Hammertone Ride Cymbal by Sabian - 2701g
1 x Crescent 22" Hammertone Chinese Cymbal by Sabian - 2318g
"Any good ride is crashable" I disagree.
"I don't think size really matters as long as it fits the genre". I was told that decades ago, oddly enough, not by a drummer.
