Thread: 3 up ride position?

    Default 3 up ride position?

Can’t find a comfy spot for my ride now with a 3up configuration. I have it to the right above the 16” floor tom. Feels too far to the right and too close. For those with a 3 up, where’s your ride?

Back when I played three up, the only comfortable spot for me was above the third rack tom and floor tom and this came after much experimentation. For large configurations, I've always thought that playing open handed with the ride above the hi hat ala Simon Philips and Billy Cobham is the way to go ...

    Are you running a 3 up 1 down? Or a 3 up 2 down?

I'm running a 2 down on my setup and I keep my ride right between my 14-16 FT.
I also though play on the left side of the cymbal vs the front center.

Depends on the position of the 3 ride toms.

    ^^^ This.

But I love the ride cymbal in the conventional position so much, I'm now playing 1-up, 2-down and don't have any intention of changing.

I have all 3 offset with the 8" a little higher to clear the HHs. It kind of looks like the beginning of a Neil Peart set of auxiliary toms and doesn't look the best but allows the ride to be close, low, and comfy. kit birdseye at Ron's.jpg

I just started using a 3 up with the addition of an 8 inch rack and I was able to keep my ride where it always was, just above the floor tom. Now I am experimenting with a second hi hat (closed) to use with double bass. I have squeezed it in between the floor tom and the ride for now, I'll see how it feels.

The tom triangle set up is always an option... they
just need to really be angled that way.

You could always play with 6 up. My ride cymbal has been in the same place for 56 years.

Me too Spaz. That's actually my friends house in Virginia Beach. I retired in August and cruised down there for a drumageddon in September/October. He got those nice Performance in Cherry finish a year or so ago and I was looking for something to do. It was so loud and boomy in that high ceiling room we went out and bought some drum rings. (GC didn't have 'em...local Mom & Pop did) They sounded great like that.

In my opinion, if something is causing you to "struggle", what's it doing there?

I use 2 rides. A 22" vintage Zildjian sizzler over my last rack tom and a 22" Zildjian Amir over my first floor tom. My current set up is 6 up 2 down with 3 snares and 6 cymbals.

I've always liked my ride over the kick drum so I did this.
