Default Band pictures with instruments - is it lame?

I have a pet peeve about band pictures where the members pose holding their instruments. To me it just looks so cheesy. The drummer is usually just holding a pair of sticks, which just makes it worse. You never see well-known bands posing that way, unless it's in a concert setting. To me a band picture should be portraying an image, and that is achieved by the look of the band and the setting of the picture. I say this because one of my bands is getting ready to do a professional photo shoot and we are discussing locations, one of which is an abandoned psychiatric center that would be really cool(hopefully we don't get arrested for trespassing), and when I said to one of the guys that there are to be no instruments in the picture, he couldn't understand my objection. Is it just me? What do you guys think?

It's your creative expression, that's all. We all have different tastes. It might be a matter of compromise at the end of the day. - Good luck!

I do have holding drum sticks for shoots lol
One of my old bands that did well we did shoots at first with instruments.

One band I was in where 2 members were married did a shoot and the husband and wife were posed like it was a family portrait. AND everybody(except me, of course) was holding instruments. Needless to say, I HATED those pictures.

Personally I like the instruments. Helps to align the faces with the names and the instrument played by each.

    all the best...

Looks like some of the guys that missed da Vinci's "The Last Supper", and are waiting for "The Last Late Night Snack". Too bad that the wine is all gone and all that's left is Diet Water and 3 Twinkies.

with our band it helps tell people what we sound like: banjo, mandolin, washboard, fiddle..etc. Bluegrass, Americana.. instruments in picture telegraph that, I think. makes sense in our case, right ?

I like band photos with instruments if it's tastefully done. Not just holding the instruments but something a little more artistic.

Truth is....most band pics are lame. On a set up stairs. Next to a brick wall. Next to a stone wall. Looking up at the sky standing in a grassy field. All lack any imagination.

Ha ! That's true. And don't forget trying to look tough, sinister and unfriendly. I see that a lot, and don't quite get it.

My band from back in the 80's had a picture like that. The photographer told us to tilt our heads downward and look up. We were a punk\new wave band so that was the desired effect. But my Mom saw it and said "Why are you all mad?"Promo1.jpg

It seems that for the last 30 years (give or take a year) everybody in a band wants to be a bada$$ or wants the "public" to think they are. Even the ladies. When did that happen?

I have no idea how good nubdrummers band was, but the girl has/had great legs.

I guess at some point music fans decided that if they were to go out to a club, it would be most ideal if they got beat up & mugged by a band member.

That's too funny!! 80's at it's best! The age I am now, I would say the same thing.

None of that on my old Herman's Hermits albums.

The guys always smiled for the camera and looked like they actually enjoyed what they did for a living.

I suppose there's just not much happiness around anymore.

    all the best...
