Default So I got this at work today?

I work for a small school district and we are cleaning out one of our big room and I found this little guy hiding in the corner, so I asked my boss if I could have it.

It’s in very rough shape, but I love to restore drums and bring them back to life.

I have a few questions maybe one of you experts might be able to help me with.
There is no marking of any kind, so I’m going to assume it’s just a cheap snare. It’s made of mahogany.
There is literally no bearing edges or maybe they were the old rounded bearing edge perhaps(see picture)there is maybe a slight cut.

The hoops are really odd(see picture)they look almost like old die cast but the it folds over by the head, never seen this before.

It has a Ludwig throw-off but looks like it was put on as a replacement.

    1. Any idea who produced these lugs? Do they look familiar to anyone?

    2. The hoops are very odd any idea on these?

    3. Bearing edges?

Any help would be awesome, here are some pictures

Looks like a budget made in Japan or Taiwan snare. The inside ply is Luan and the grain is oriented vertically...which is an Import trademark. Looks like it may have an outer ply of poplar or some other wood(?). The hoops are a knock-off of older stick savers or similar style. Really need to see more pictures to tell more.

It could make a fun project and may even sound pretty decent.

    Play the SONG......not the DRUMS!!!

Thanks man! I kind of figured it was a low budget snare.
What do you need to see and I will add some more pictures?

That could be. Star would be the original brand name for Tama.

The bearing edges are probably rounded over from wear. Rounded edges will give it a vintage “warm & woody” sound, but they can also make it hard to tune if the shell is warped and/or out of round. I would flatten and square the edges with sand paper on a plate glass, then reshape them by hand. Follow that up with several coats of Tung oil and some Minwax wood hardener applied to the bearing edges. The snare beds would also need to be reshaped.
If you’re really interested in making it a project, I’ve posted several threads explaining how I’ve done such things on some of my own cheap drum projects.
