    Default Recommend me a snare

Hi. So I still got my birthday money saved, and Christmas is coming. I really need to replace my pearl forum poplar snare. I got about 500$-600$ saved up. I'm still some sort of a newbie so I don't really know what to get. My roots and influence though are Rock and metal so I'm probably gonna get something powerful. Should I get a steel/brass or maple snare? Oh yeah and one handicap I have is I can't try them out myself because the expensive stuff here is for order <_<

you have that much to spend on snare alone? have you considered a used snare from ebay?

the reference snare is freakin awesome. and the new brass refference are sweet too. either is a good choice.

also, you cant go wrong with the pearl free floaters. if you shop well you could get this one....

...along with maple and brass inserts (or whatever custom shell you want) for 600 bucks. like having 3 snares in one. as much as i cant stand tico tores and bon jovi, i love his sig snare. the cast aluminum sounds great and it is damn loud. i have the 5x14 brass and maple free floaters and really love them. either one is good for rock of any sorts. i am a little partial to the brass shell.

heck man with 500-600 bucks you can get a killer main snare and a side snare and a stand to put it on.

you really need to try to get to a guitar center and listen to some snares tho. that is alot of money to spend on the advise of others.

Yes, although Funky can give you more details than I can, since he has one.

BTW, that was yes to changing the shell, not the forgiving the stupidity part! LOL I don't think the question was stupid at all. Before Funky educated me on the free floater, I'd never heard of a snare where the shell could be changed.

My recommendation would be the Ludwig Supraphnic 402. It is the most recorded drum in history and was good enough for John Bonham. They are just under $400 so the price is good and will allow for you to pick up a cymbal or something with the extra money you saved. the good thing about them is they are really versitale in their tuning range.

I agree wif "back" Ludwig Supraphonic is a GREAT choice,,,,,,i have a variety of snares a PEARL FREE FLOATING MAPLE is my primary....for about $200-$300 you can buy BRASS or COPPER SHELLS there are no lugs on the shell ,they connect top and bottom around da lugs so .....whip one off drop another on!!!!

the ultracast is a great sounding snare. it would be a good choice. the thing about the tico tores sig free floater is that they have the same 3mm cast aluminum shell minus the powder coating found on the ultracast. the ff will be louder and more resonant because the design that has no contact between the shell and lugs. plus you can find maple, copper and brass shells for around a hundred bucks. you can get even cheaper shells if you wanted. i have seen a few people that have had custom keller shells made for them aswell as some solid 1 ply and stave shells. i myself am going to have a custom masterworks shell made for mine.

also the ludwig supra is a great recomendation, aswell as the black beauty.

you can get it any way you want. the one i gave the link for is the tico tores signature model that comes with the same 3mm cast aluminum shell as the ultra cast.

just take off the top rim and head, pull out the shell off of the basket piece and put another one on, replace top rim and head and there ya go.as for damage, you always have to be careful with bearing edges when you change heads. the free floater only has a top bearing edge as the bottom edge side is flat and flush against the basket.

here is a close up of mine. kinda hard to tell from the reflection, all the parts connect to the aluminum basket piece so that no hardware touches the shell.

I have no first hand experience with this, but i have read that brass is warmer more woodlike in tone with a good crack. Aluminum is brighter, loud and also a good crack. I want to purchase a brass supra 402 for my next snare!

So your opinion is the brass is brighter than the aluminum? Huh that is interesting, I have always heard the exact opposite. Who else has an oppinion on this and see if we can get a consensus. I have never played a brass shelled snare so I really don't know other than what I have been told and read.
