Thinking about buying a gong
So I’m thinking about buying a gong. Maybe a 30 inch Zildjian.
I’m wondering if any of the gong owners on the forum have advice about size, or if there are any brands or models to seek after or shy away from.
I realize that this is a totally unnecessary addition, but hey, I don’t have one, and it seems you can get a nice one for around the same cost as nice snare.
What do you think, waste of money, or fun addition?

I had one in the 70s........36-inch Zildjian........like you say, unnecessary.
Even though it sounded very cool, I used it even less than I expected.
Sold it within a year.

Sounds like my cowbell. I really don’t use it on any songs, but I still set it up on occasion. Mostly just to irritate the rest of the band between songs.

I've saved a bloody fortune by NOT having to buy:
A Gong
A metronome
A practice pad (did just fine with pillows)
A China cymbal
300 pairs of drumsticks every year
Somewhere between 50 to 100 heads every year
10-20 new cymbals every year
Last, but certainly not least, a freakin' cow bell
The savings pretty much paid for my GT.

I used to have a Zildjian 30" gong. It sounded great but I never really used it once i stopped playing out. I sold it a couple years ago and bought a PS4 Pro with the money. I'm glad I did. They look cool but rarely get usedOriginally Posted by -bongos-

They are definitely nice instruments... but soooo rarely used. Hopefully!! It seems to me if you used one more than once a performance you'd be risking redundancy... verging on the edge of gimmickry.

Think about how often you'd use it and ask yourself if it's a waste of $$

I think you guys have talked me back from the ledge. (With the exception of Spaz)
While it would be a really cool piece to add to the collection, I don’t think the seldom use would warrant the price. It would be fun to drag it out to a couple of the local drum circles in Atlanta, but would be as much of a pain in the butt as moving my congas around.
That money would probably serve me better in the savings account.
And now the hunt for the next snare drum I don’t need continues. Anyone have an opinion on the DW super solid drums?
