    Default Crazy Weather...

This last week was one for the record. Ive never seen anything quite like it. Of course, Colorado got nailed with a bomb cyclone (never heard that one before). But Wednesday-Thursday here in Nebraska was just nuts....
The entire western 2/3 of the state was hit with this blizzard. Anywhere from 6 to 24...along with 60-80mph winds. Heards of cattle were buried like skiers in an avalanche. Now THATS a proper blizzard. At the same time, the north and central eastern 1/3 of the state was hit with warm temps and lots of rain. Not a big deal, except the ground was already saturated and froze from the highest snowfall since 1914, which was still on the ground. The snow melted rapidly and the water had to go somewhere! Ice jams on all the rivers broke up...meanwhile, the Corps of Engineers was releasing increased amounts of water into the Missouri River. The result was widespread flooding of historic proportion. Multiple dams and levees have failed, creating massive water surges. Bridges and buildings were ripped away and carried away. Dozens of towns and even entire counties are being evacuated by the National Guard. Luckily, the south east corner of the state was relatively untouched.
In my town, we have moderate flooding on the river, but it should stay within the flood plain.

Some livestock got through it, but a lot were lost. They look for places to shelter if they can. The bad part is it’s calving season, so there were many new-born calves that were lost. The farmers & ranchers literally risk their lives to save as many as they can. As far as the flood, the cattle head to high ground. There were many images of bunches of cattle all huddled together on a tiny island in the middle of the flood waters. Entire hog farms and cattle feed yards were literally swept away by floods. It’s pretty sad.
