    Default Thoughts.....

Question for my fellow drummers. What do you think it means when people are air drumming in front of you at a gig?

Depends. If you suck, they're prolly trying to show you how it's really done. If you don't suck, they're prolly just rocking out to your incredible chops.

There's an old saying, "Everyone's a drummer". I think it's primal. There are a lot of people out there that instinctively 'feel' rhythm and I think there are a lot of wanna-be drummers out there too. Then there are those that do play but only as a hobby and probably aren't very good. They live vicariously through you as they beat the drums in the air right along with you.

I think if they're air drumming along to an iconic fill like the one in In The Air Tonight, they're demonstrating that they know the part and that this is where it comes up in the song. Generally though I think it means they like your drumming and it's the equivalent of people singing along.

It's all they can do while in a public place. It does make me wonder what they do when they are alone.

In a way, they are like the guys at sports events, be it baseball, football, basketball, or the fight club that is sometimes called hockey, that jump up, pound their chest like they, and only they, scored the winning point, touchdown, run, or whatever they call it in hockey.

Actually, I think it is stupid.

When you are playing in a club with a lot of pretty ladies dancing, why would you want to watch some fool air drumming.
