    Default RIP Lyle Mays

Lyle Mays, jazz pianist extraordinaire, died yesterday at age 66 after a "long illness".

My jazz set teacher in college, Steve Houghton, played in the One O'clock jazz band with Lyle Mays in the early 70s at the North Texas State school of Jazz (Denton) under the direction of the late, great Leon Breeden.

Both Houghton and Mays are/were from Wisconsin.
You have heard Mays' jazz piano if you have ever listened to any Pat Metheny Group, winner of multiple Grammy awards..

Sad news indeed. I didn't know he was in One O'Clock band with Houghton. Small world.

Yes -- killer lab band too.
Last I heard from Steve, he made Full Professor, School of Music @ Indiana University.
