Sam Woodyard is one of the legends of jazz drumming especially because of his drumming wiht Duke Ellington. He made over 35 albums with the "Duke". He was like Buddy Rich in that he was self-taught.

He made over 10 albums with Johnny Hodges and albums and played with Alice Babs, Harry Carney, Rosemary Clooney, Paul Gonsalves, Jimmy Hamilton, Lionel Hampton, Quincy Jones, Brooks Kerr & Paul Quinichette, Joya Sherrill, Billy Strayhorn, Clark Terry, Norris Turney, Jimmy Woode, Cat Anderson, Ella Fitzgeral, Teddy Wilson, and others.
