    J.C. Heard (James Charles Heard) August 10, 1917 - September 27, 1988 was an American swing, bop, and blues drummer.

    He played and recorded with Gene Ammons, Shorty Baker and Doc Cheatham, Benny Carter, Arnett Cobb, Roy Eldridge, Bud Freeman, Dizzy Gillespie, Johnny Hodges, Claude Hopkins, Howard McGhee, Al Sears, John Wright, Lester Young, Oscar Peterson, Teddy Wilson, Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Billie Holiday, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, Dinah Washington, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan, Erroll Garner, Oscar Pettiford, Cab Calloway and others.

    As leader/co-leader, he recorded several albums. He toured with Norman Granz's Jazz at the Philharmonic in the 1950s. His legacy is honored with a yearly jazz drumming competition held as part of the Detroit Jazz Festival.

    This is J.C. playing a drum solo in Japan with Jazz at the Philharmonic (JATP) in Tokyo in 1953.
