    Default Black Drummers - Tuning

I've been watching a lot of black drummers lately as they [usually] have amazing chops. Has anyone else noticed that they've been tuning their drums very flat over the last few years? A real thuddy sound with less tone it seems. I actually think it plays into some of the types of amazing licks they do but maybe it's just a part of black culture coming out of the churches, etc.

    Thoughts?

You know... When gospel chops came around I was mind blown. The speed and the fills...just intense and amazing. But honestly now I'm bored with watching gospel chops because it all sounds the same.

You mean like today's country music?

Seriously, yeah it does all tend to sound very similar. I guess I'd still rather hear that thought than a drummer without any chops. There are far too many of those too.

It's certainly easier to play fast on a more focused sounding kit, you get more rebound off the head with the less air you're moving. I can play the same licks on my DW kit vs my Yamaha but the DW's resonate so much it sounds muddy. The faster you play, the more focused sounding the drums need to be. If you have a big open sounding kit it just sounds like a big mud puddle.

    "gospel chops"

Just when I thought I had heard it all i.e. wet, dry, warm, trashy, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam. Now comes "Gospel Chops".

What's next, truckstop chops, portable potty chops, pork chops?????

Tom, put the "Hot Girls" back up. That was way more interesting than this.

I don't live in my basement Zack, at least not yet.

Being as I'm not a church goer, why should anyone think that I should have heard of 'Gospel Chops" let alone have any interest in them.

Every time I have heard (read) things like that, it usually turns out to be stuff I've heard decades ago. Someone just gives it a new name, writes a book or makes a DVD and some buy it thinking it's a "must have".

That will be $4.95 for the laugh.

"His tuning doesn't sound too particular in any one direction from the videos I've watched."

I always thought that he should have gone southwest instead of northeast. Someone give the guy a map.

As far as gospel chops, they’re all great linear grooves mostly to the extreme.
