    Default Jim Gordon

Jim Gordon, an American drummer, was most noted for being the drummer for "Derek and the Dominos" . After Cream and Blind Faith, Eric Clapton formed the supergroup "Derek and the Dominos". Clpaton did play with "Delaney and Bonnie", but that was not "his" group. Unfortunatly, later in life, Jim had some bad life experiences which are better not to dwell on and couldn't play drums anymore. Instead getting into that, it's better to listen to his great rock drumming.

At age 17 he backed the Legendary Everly Brothers and went on to become one of the top session drummers in Los Angeles. He recorded with the Beach Boys, The Byrds, and Mason Williams on the hit "Classical Gas".

Leaving Delanie & Bonnie, Clapton, Gordon, Carl Radle (b), and Bobby Whitlock (keyboards) formed Derek and the Dominos. They recorded for George Harrison (among others) on Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" album. After that, they produced "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs".

Jim also played and recorded with Joe Cocker, Dave Mason, Traffic, Harry Nilsson, and interestingly was the drummer for the album "Bongo Rock" with the "Incredible Bongo Band". He also was with Frank Zappa and on the Zappa album "Apostrohe" (a jam with Zappa (g), Tony Duran (g), and Jack Bruce (b).

Other recordings are with Steely Dan, Duane Allman, Hoyt Axton, Joan Baez, The Beau Brummels, Stephen Bishop, Cilla Black, Bread, Teresa Brewer, Jackson Browne, Jack Bruce, The Carpenters, Cher, Eric Clapton, Gene Clark, Crosby Stills & Nash, The Band, Donovan, Dr. John, Art Garfunkel, Merle Haggard, Hall & Oates, Richard "Groove" Holmes, John Lee Hooker, Jim Horn Thelma Houston, The Hues Corporation, B.B. King, Carol King, John Lennon, and a whole lot more (I'm getting tired of listing these, I'm not even half way through.

This is Jim playing a rare Derek and the Dominos' song called "Devil Road" that was recorded in a session for the second album which was never released. Renee Armand is the guest vocalist. These guitar solos are why Clapton is "Clapton!".

This is "Let It Rain" live with the drum solo from the "Live at Fillmore,1970" album. This is from back in the days when bands used to "PLAY".

    R.I.P. Jim Gordon

He passed away today at 77.

Man, I didn't know he co-wrote Layla. He was also on Steely Dan's "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and Carly Simon's "You're So Vain".

Check out this list of artists he played with:

    Gordon Lightfoot
    Dave Mason
    Alice Cooper
    Helen Reddy
    Frank Zappa
    Tom Waits
    Johnny Rivers
    Tom Petty
    Sonny and Cher
    Nancy Sinatra
    Glen Campbell
    Leon Russell
    The Byrds
    Duane Allman
    Jackson Browne
    Joan Baez
    ... and more.

His career came to an abrupt end in 1983 when he was convicted of murdering his mother.
