    Tony Oladipo Allen (1940 - 2020) was a Nigerian drummer, composer, and songwriter who lived and worked in Paris. He also wrote a book called "Tony Allen: An Autobiography of the Master Drummer of Afrobeat".

    When he was young he listened to albums by Max Roach and Art Blakey and was influenced by them. He formed his own group called "No Discrimination" and performed in Lagos until he move to London and later to Paris. He alos played with many other musicians in Africa before he left.

    Tony created what is know as "Afrofunk" which is a synthesis of "Afrobeat", electronic music, R&B, and rap. Afrobeat is a combination of fuji music, highlife and American jazz which focuses on chanted vocals and complex rhythm patterns.

    "Fuji music" is a popular type of Nigerian music. "Highlife" is a music genre that originated in present-day Ghana early in the 20th century. It uses the melodic and main rhythmic structures of traditional Akan music, but is played with Western instruments. Highlife is characterised by jazzy horns and multiple guitars which lead the band.

    He recorded over 80 albums with variou African musicins and other international musicians.
