John Stanier was born in Baltimore Maryland in 1968 and is best known for playing with "Helmet" He is now playing with "Battles".

John has also played with "The Mark of Cain" and "Tomahawk". He made six albums wiht Helmet, two albums with The Mark of Cain, four albums with Tomahawk, and five albums with Battles.

He also contributed drumming to albums by Pitchshifter, Primer 55, Align, Cage, Melissa Auf dr Maur, Prefuse 73, The Field, and Rone.

He has a drum corps background and played tenor drums with the Florida Wave Drum and Bugle Corps. He studied orchestral percussion the University of South Florida. His biggest influence is Neil Peart but has also been influenced by Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford, Terry Bozzio, Carl Palmer, and Lenny White.

His drumming with Helmet has been considered a major influence on rock drummers.
