    Default Bill Dowdy

Bill Dowdy (1932-2017) was born in Osceola, Arkansas but the family moved to Benton Harbor, Michigan six months later.and was a jazz drummer and teacher. As with a lot of drummers (like Buddy Rich) he began beating on things as soon as he could hold things. He is best know for being the drummer for "the 3 Sounds", but he started out as a session drummer at Chess Records.

He recorded more than twenty-two albums with them. He was influenced by Gene Krupa, Max Roach, Roy Haynes, and Tony Williams.

He also played and recorded with many blues bands, Anita O'day, Lou Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, Johnny Rivers, Chet Baker, The Gibson Brothers, Nat Adderley, Lester Young, Johnny Griffen, Sonny Stitt, and others.

This is Bill playing "On Green Dolphin Street" from the album "Moods" by "the 3 Sounds". Gene Harris (p) and Andrew Simpkins (b). This is what you call "laid-back".
