I'm not even sure what HAM radios are... never heard of them
Due to chatter on another forum I've developed a small fascination with ham radio.
I just bought a small handheld unit with all kinds of options/accessories. I'm totally lost, atm.
Is anyone already a licensed user and if so, do you have any guidance for a newb? I mostly want to be able to monitor some channels, (not sure what yet) and be able to communicate should cell towers and the internet have a bad day.
Thanks for any information or guidance!

There was more of them operating when I was younger (at least it seemed that way). Same with CB radios. You could talk to people in other countries like California and West Virginia.
I had a CB radio in my car years ago for about 20 minutes. You would get on the highway and turn the CB on and hear " This is weird person, is anyone out there, c'mon back". That was the end of my CB experience.
As for Ham Radios, I haven't heard them mentioned in decades, but I guess there are people that still talk on them.

I believe you’re supposed to be licensed using one.
When I was a kid, the coolest thing was to dial in to the truckers on our walkie talkies. Not quite ham radio, lol.
