    Default Alex Riel

Alex Riel was born in 1940 and is a Danish jazz and rock drummer. His first group Alex Riel/Palle Mikkelborg Quintet won Montreux Grand Prix Award at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1968 and it was published in Billboard's June 1968 issue. He has more than thirteen albums as leader.

In 1967 he formed the famous rock band (in Denmark) called "The Savage Rose".

He has played and recorded with Kenny Drew, Kenny Werner, Bob Brookmeyer, Thomas Clausen, Bill Evans, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Jackie McLean (five albums), Dexter Gordon (14 albums), Ray Brown, Donald Byrd, Don Cherry, Art Farmer, Harry Sweets Edison, Charlie Mariano, Stéphane Grappelli, Hank Jones, Thad Jones,, Ben Webster, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen, Micheal Brecker, and others.

This is Alex playing a rock drum solo in his own tiny village of Liseleje, Denmark at "It's Annual Beach Party!", July 18, 2009. Alex had promised the local villagers to play a long solo, just like he did at the last year's party. Alex is playing someone else's drums, and if you have ever done a solo on someone else's drums you know what you're up against. The video cuts off, so you can't see all of the solo, but you can see enough.
