    Default Carley Barrett

Carlton "Carly" Barrett (1950-1987) was a Jamaican drummer and percussionist. His musical development in the early years was with his brother Aston "Family Man" Barrett as a member of Lee "Scratch" Perry's house band "The Upsetters".

The brothers joined Bob Marley and The Wailers around 1970. He co-wrote the well known Bob Marley song "War" and with his brother Aston co-wrote "Talkin' Blues".

Carlton Barrett is on all the albums recorded by the Wailers. Carly popularised the one drop rhythm, a percussive drumming style created by Winston Grennan (1944-2000, a Jamaican drummer), famous for session work from 1962 to 1973 in Jamaica as well as later in New York City through the 1970s and 1980s).

The Wailer rhythm section planted the seeds of today's international reggae because of Carly and Ashton's playing.

Carly used the one drop rhythm in the late 1960s; this beat places kick/snare emphasis on the third beat within a highly syncopated 4/4 bar. One Drop, an outgrowth of the ska and rocksteady, became the foundation for reggae music, combined with traditional Jamaican forms such as mento (Jamaican music that influenced Ska and reggae) and Kumina (African and Jaimacan music).

This is Carley (at least a little) with Bob Marley and the Wailers playing "Stir it Up" live in London in 1973.
