    Sammy Figueroa was born in 1948 in the Bronx, New York and is a drummer/percussionist. At 18 he joined the band of bassist Bobby Valentín (Roberto "Bobby" Valentín) who was from Puerto Rico and moved to New York City and also a salsa bandleader and known as "El Rey del Bajo" (King of the Bass). Sammy also co-led the Brazilian/Latin fusion group Raíces.

    He has played and recorded as leader at least six albums, and played and recorded with the Average White Band, George Benson, Blondie, Tommy Bolin, David Bowie, The Brecker Brothers, Stephanie Mills, Chic (six albums), Joe Cocker, Melissa Manchester, Miles Davis, Joey DeFrancesco, Candi Staton, Al Foster, Dave Grusin, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Debbie Harry, Etta Jones, Mick Jagger, Stanley Jordan, Debbie Gibson, Chaka Khan, Ben E. King, Carole King, Earl Klugh, Herbie Mann, Jay McShann, Charles Mingus, Bob Mintzer Big Band, Jimmy Ponder, Sonny Rollins, David Lee Roth, Diana Ross, Leo Sayer, John Scofield, Sister Sledge, Patti Smith, Spyro Gyra, Luther Vandross, Narada Michael Walden, and others
