    Francis Clay (1923 - 2008), was an American jazz and blues drummer, best known for his work behind Muddy Waters in the 1950s and 1960s. He was as an original member of the James Cotton band. His drumming influenced many of the British Invasion rock 'n' rollers of the 1960s such as Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones.

    He wasBorn in Rock Island, Illinois and started playing jazz professionally at the age of 15 and played drums behind many of the biggest names of 20th century popular American music.

    He played with Charlie Parker and also Jimi Hendrix in New York. He played and recorded with John Lee Hooker, Big Mama Thornton, Lightnin' Hopkins, Jimmy Rogers, Otis Spann, Muddy Waters (33 albums), Mark Hummel, James Cotton, Red Archibald, Johnny Dyer, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, Roy Rogers, Pete Sears, and many others.
