    Default Favorite or preferred snare

I have always jut used the snare drum that came with whatever came with the kits I have purchased over the years. I have decided I would like to buy a new snare. I am looking for some opinions on your preferred snare. I have actually been leaning towards a Pork Pie snare or a TAMA S.L.P. Big Black Steel Snare Drum 14 x 8. I play original hard rock. Thanks!

The only snare you will need is a Ludwig Black Beauty Super Sensitive.

So far it's a toss up for me between the Tama slp Maple 13x7 and my DW Collectors 10-6 maple 14x6.5 with 3-pos. butt plate

I'm a HUGE fan of 13x7 snares... with that said, The Tama G-MAPLE SLP 13X7 will NEVER EVER leave my collection and is on my top 3 favorite lists. Along side that is the Pork Pie 13x7 Brass Patina.

And I have over 60 snares in my collection so I've tried a lot.

I'm with Rick on this one. My Black Beauty has not left my snare stand since I acquired it. Only draw back is the cost. There are a lot of great, and cheaper, snares out there including the two you mentioned. Snares are like Lays Potato Chips, you can't stop at just one.

I love the sound of a Ludwig Acrolite. My son and I both have one on our kits and plan on keeping them there for a good long while.

I opted to try out a 7x13 Pork Pie Little Squealer in satin black. Support provided by my guitarist's amp head. I really like it so far.

Do yourself a favor and check out a Mapex Sledgehammer 6.5x14. You won't regret it.

I currently play a dw Edge. It's a 14" X 5". It's just about a perfect snare in my opinion. Metal edges with a maple shell. I once had a Supraphonic and it was hard to find fault with that one either.

It depends a lot on what you are playing. That said, I favour metal snares and my number one is a mid-sixties Black Beauty, very versatile. I also use an Acrolite (90's Blackulite) for small combo jazz. I have not found a wood snare that I really liked better that these 2 drums.
