On a scale from 1 to 10 where do you see yourself as a drummer. With 1 being the lowest and 10 the highest regarding overall skill and competency with drumming.

Was trying to be modest... especially being first.
I have a degree in percussion performance, did some touring, recording and taught privately for a music store for 16 years.
I've studied jazz, cuban, grew up on Polkas, waltzes, and rock-n-roll and then went on tour with a progressive metal band. I've covered pretty much all genres.
i just love music all around!

I would have to say around a 3 maybe 4 on a good day.. Have a buddy (late 50's) best bass player I ever heard, plays jazz, rock, funk, and sings. (see red sky mary in my signature) He now has a 3 piece band with arguably the best guitar player around these parts. He said they were looking for a drummer to take place of current guy who is in another 2 bands and does not have time to commit to this new 3 pc band which is really taking off gig wise. I politely said no thank you because 1) I have never played with such advanced players before and 2) more importanly they do not practice together ever! They do not even make a set list they just call out songs as they go. There is no way I could feel comfortable doing that for 4 hrs a night 2-3 times a week. I have a hard time with staying in a practice routine lately and I know my chops are probably the worst they have ever been in the last 6 years or so. Tried to play along to radar love last night and was mortified of how bad I was. Even the intro shuffle, every time I tried to kick the bass drum while doing that intro my shuffle went to hell... LOL ughhh but it is a journey so I do not get too far down on myself.

Man, it kind of depends. Right now I'm pretty average at best. 5 or 6. Summer and winter before last I had some guys coming over at least once, sometimes three times a week and we'd play 3 to 4 hours a night. I would get SO warmed up and loose that I honestly played some of the best of my life. Wicked independent left hand. There were moments before that pandemic wash-out that I would award myself with maybe an 8 or 8+!
So it's kind of a moment by moment thing...

I am a "One trick pony". I can do that one trick very well though
The Varukers.
3 to 4. I started later in life and just do it as a home hobby. I would love to get better, but don't have the time to invest on the skills I know I need. Hoping that retirement (a ways away) will afford me some time to truly invest. Until then I will just plug along and enjoy the instrument.

A good follow up question would be; do you think a professional, high level drum instructor would agree with your assessment? If you were to ask Mike Portnoy, Thomas Lang or Vinnie Colaiuta what they thought of your playing, would their number match yours?

LOL, To those guys your probably either a 10 or a 1 : )

If it's based on whether you were successful playing to the point of it being your only means of income then I would say that $2.7 million over 32 years would qualify as being successful.
As for where I would rate myself: 1st, I could care less about what the "pros" would think of my ability to play drums. 2nd, When I was asked to come back for the late night jams in Harlem by some great players,
that told me all I needed to know.
For my "rating" on DC, that would be up to the people on DC. I would certainly rate Zack higher than a 6. Maybe 6 1/4 or even a 6 1/2. (JK Zack) You are an 8 at least.
Tom was a lot better when he was the black guy. As a white guy there is much room for improvement.

Currently prolly a 6. Old and don't practice that much anymore. Back when I was making money at this.....more likely an 8ish. Time flies when you're not paying attention.
1 to 1,5.
