I have the PDP snare with hooks and I hit the claw once in a while but never enough to worry about it. Once I oriented the snare drum comfortably to wear my left hand plays it was set it and forget it.
In my never-ending search for snares, I'm considering a few that have claw hooks on the rim. Very cool look, but I'm wondering if those get in the way for rim shots. Also, I noticed the lug nuts are higher than the rim, which could also get in the way of rim shots.
Not sure how I'd avoid mangling sticks.
