Hey, Tom. I don't play "out" anymore and haven't for years. (70 yo) But I couldn't resist a hotel lounge comment. I played for Natalie Cole early in her career when she was starting out getting "her feet wet" under the tutelage of a sub agent of her dad's agents. We frequently played the lounge at the Diplomat in Hollywood, FL, the Executive Inn in Buffalo, NY and a big Ramada in Binghamton, NY.
There were others of course but they were more one offs where the big upper scale joints were repetitive.
In response to your question about the Hollidays, Ramadas et al... those gigs really seemed to drop off hugely way back, even in the 90s...at least in the northeast. I haven't frequented any substantial population centers much in the last decade or so but at least up here in the hinterlands... you know...towns without local buses... there are zero lounge acts. Not many lounges for that matter.
Never mind. I'm not your question's target demographic. Oops.
