Thinner shells are more resonant. Because there is less mass, they are easier to excite, they resonate more than thick and heavy shells. If you are looking for deeper tones with less resonance, use thicker shells.
I know this is a bit of a head-on kind of question, but which is better... A thicker or thinner ply? I prefer deep tones with alot of clarity and little ring. I had always thought that a thicker ply would be better to make the drum sound deep, but I'm looking around and most sets with thinner or less plys cost alot more than those with thicker or more. Most buyers usually will say how much better in quality they are than the thicker.
