This is a heartwarming story. My take away? It goes by fast guys. Get out there and do everything you want to do while you still can.

Good story -- thanks for posting that.
I have a very similar story....parents gave me my first kit at 11 years old -- taught myself to play simple rock songs and got better....in the 70s, all club gigs were six nights with Monday off....although I was fortunate to be in a very good band during 75 - 77, I knew I really did not want to spend my life gigging 6 nights per week....took a different career path but still love playing (less frequent) gigs....my band has a gig next Friday !
And -- I'm not yet in a nursing home.

    Let me think about this.

The most fun I ever had was with a blonde in LA about 40 years ago.

As for drumming, the whole time it was fun, a lot of fun when 1 considers my alternative was driving an oil truck in the miserable Jersey winters where the cleaning of cesspools was a step further up the ladder of success.

Doing it all over again would only be if I could go back to '66 and start undoing mistakes I made ( the really stupid 1's) back then and fix the 1's I have made since then.

What a great truth. Music, more than any other artistic medium, can touch your soul in such a profound way. It can take you back to your first date, maybe the car you took to the prom, your wedding song, etc...

To have the ability to play and create it yourself, in addition to being "just" a listener is a double-blessing
