    Default Bass drum reso head

How much sonic difference is there with these things?

I love the look of the black branded bass drum reso but am wondering if I can't get more tone from a "better" skin? Maybe a 2 ply or a coated?

    Big differences.

I'm my experience, getting a single ply bass drum Reso with an inner hoop ring works the best. I've tested this on multiple bass drums over the years.
Also, I don't add any muffling material to my bass drums. Plus, what you hear in the driver's seat is very different to what projects front of house.
The right heads and tuning will sort just about anything.

    Batter head is another topic.

Thanks for the info... Backing up a bit, this all started when I was goofing around in a local music store. They had a pdp concept maple with a 24" kick . It had the coated logo head and a coated batter, and sounded way more round and tonal without being crazy boomy than my 24" DW and I was kinda surprised at how much better it sounded.
I have an emad with a reinforcement sticker on the batter side and the stock reso logo head with the EQ pillow just grazing each head. Its got great attack but little tone, so I'm wondering how to get that boom and not just a smack.

Single ply heads (coated or not) will resonate more.

Watch a decent bass drum head comparison to get a handle on what is what.

Here's one. (unfortunately the resonant head status is unknown which is a great shame).
