Put them in the bags. Wrap them in some furniture movers quilts and hold them in place with one of those load positioner , cargo bar things.
Looking for idea here. Normally would put them inside the cabin on the back seat for cushioning but unfortunately don't have the room.
I am guessing stacking them not a good idea. I have some big unpadded bags I can put them in but the drums would be sitting on their sides, again I am guessing not a good idea. The back of the pick up is clean and plastic lined but a hard surface for drums and very bouncy in the back of a pick up truck. I can't warrant drum cases as its not an expensive kit. Anyone have any ideas short of laying a doona or thick bedspread in the back?

Just picked up a great cheap little tip off another forum, and sort of so obvious but I never thought of it....just a large storage box. Will be perfect for my kit as the Floor tom and snare only 13" diameter. Already picked out a box at local hardware shop will fit perfect with a bit of room to spare. Got a small padded kids quilt for the bottom of the box. Snare and floor tom will sit side by side right way up on the bottom of the box. I'll put the tom on top of the snare with something across the rim of the snare and padding so the tom isn't bouncing up and down on the snare batter head. Should also have room for cymbal bag and sticks bag. bass drum can just sit as it sits normally on the floor of the pick up. Got a long travel bag for stands and a little trolley. Should just about be able to take everything in to the gig in two trips :-)
I guess even sitting on padding transporting toms and snares on their side not a good idea?

I would keep the drums end up, not on their sides. You could get some closed cell foam, cut to size, and line the box.Maybe some weatherstripping on the lid. Good luck.

Nesting.![]()

Man, I went out to see a drummer friend of mine play about a month ago and I was intrigued by his Whitney nesting drums. I watched him pack up at the end of the night and he was talking about it as he was breaking it down. Just when I was thinking to myself, "Damn, this is almost taking longer!", he says to me, "Sometimes it seems like it takes a bit longer" or something like that, lol. Beautiful drums but not sure I'm sold on this 'nesting' thing.
What is this "nesting" of which you speak?
The last time I was "nesting" I had 3 daughters.

Way back in the 70's I did not have reso heads on my Ludwigs I had nesting drums, I just did not know that;s what they were called.
Rick

I always thought that they were called "drums with no reso heads".
That would make a hell of a lot more sense than "nesting" drums.

Little toms "nest" inside of bigger toms, big tom "nests" inside of bass. Hence, nesting drums.

Well according to information stored in the Burning Bush (LOL), it sounds like you had concert toms but only if they were factory with no reso side lugs. Those may not be nestable since most kits back then were 12" and 13" mounted toms. Not easily nested.
My first real kit was a Rogers Big R and I had concert toms (8" and 10") along with a complete double bass set up. We played Rush back in the day. 2112 to be exact. I did at one time have all the resos off the standard drums and even used those woven "bullet proof" yellow batter heads back then. Can't remember what they were called. That was also back before drum tuning was invented.
More than not, todays basic kits have wider intervals between shell sizes. In some case they are designed to nest. I don't believe it was a big thing 40 years ago.

I did remove the bottom lugs. I couldn't afford cases. Just stuck them all together and threw them in the hack of my big old Ford LTD. The old yellow kevlar heads could have been Duraline or Bear.

I'm sure that back then someone said " You know, this here drum fits inside this other drum, which in turn fits inside that drum over yonder".
I would bet that something like that was said before " What do you know, that drum over yonder just might "nest" in this here drum and have little drums in the nest".
A thought to ponder.
I would seriously have to sit down and study these here drums to see if "nesting" is even a remote possibility.

Yeah, I remember North drums. And then there were those weird Rammstein Staccato drums.

Kevlar on top, no heads on bottom, drums sounded great back then.
