Been noticing quite a few mainly rock songs lately....sounds almost like they aren't using snare wires. Not an unpleasant sound at all. Like a very tightly tuned tom rather than a crack. Do people do this?

You may be hearing the snare recording with only a batter head mic. This will diminish the perception of the snare wires. JMHO.

I concur. It often just gets drowned in the mix. Also, it's more likely to happen with a wood drum than a metal one.

Sometimes my snare seems like it sounds that way. I never have wires completely off. Head is cranked pretty tight, normal number of wires underneath and not choked up.

AVH and Bonham usually that sound

I alternate between wood, stainless steel,or other metals as a side snare (altho my "workhouse"for many years has been a 13"x 3"mapex stainless steel snare (one of my best $50 investments )many times as clayton cameron has advised me...i turn snares off for a better brush sound
