You may be hearing the snare recording with only a batter head mic. This will diminish the perception of the snare wires. JMHO.

Sometimes my snare seems like it sounds that way. I never have wires completely off. Head is cranked pretty tight, normal number of wires underneath and not choked up.

I alternate between wood,stainless steel,or other metals as a side snare (altho my "workhouse"for many years has been a 13"x 3"mapex stainless steel snare (one of my best $50 investments )many times as clayton cameron has advised me...i turn snares off for a better brush sound
