Confused as to what might be good overall sizes for any areas of music. A 7pc maple/birch kit which will not always be played as such . So you can get 8x7, 10x7 12x8, 14x12, 16x14 , or deeper sizes 8x7, 10x8, 12x9, 14x14, 16x16. I know it's preference but they don't exactly have both kits in any music store set upside by side with both sizes, to play and compare!

    Q. What are you doing with your kit? Studio, live, personal practice...???

If you want new and don't want to spend a fortune; the Yamaha Stage Custom in any config, shell size you can get will suffice. Honestly it will.

If you're in the second hand market then there are deals to be found.

The audience will not know what type of wood the kit has, nor will they notice tom size/sound difference.

You will probably get better tones from the deeper toms but the more shallow ones will be a little easier to cart around.
