That blind bootleg was really well done.
He was playing a very poor defense.

If you watch the play on YouTube, it's obvious that Montana, with 3 rather large Cowboys in his face, was just trying to throw the ball away. He couldn't see the End Zone let alone Dwight Clark.

At the same time, if I was a coach of a "must win" game, I would take (all things being equal):

    1st) Joe Montana
    2nd) Roger Staubach
    3rd) Mahomes
4th) Probably Brady or possibly Marino

Joe and Dwight played together for a while. I think Joe trusted Dwight to be in the right spot. Roger Staubach might just make top 10.

I think that Joe was trying to throw the ball away and got lucky.

Joe could see him making a break and led him. If he was throwing it away it would have gone in the stands.

You would be right except for 2 things: 1st, no matter what you think he couldn't see Clark. 2nd, yes any QB could (and would) throw the ball into the 3rd row, BUT, if you watch the replay Joe was backing up on his heels and when he threw the ball his feet were almost off the ground. That will take a lot of zip and distance off the ball. Somebody in the booth said that Montana was trying to throw the ball away. Given the situation, throwing the ball away was the right move then luck moved in.

I bet the Bengals and won but lost on the 'Boys.

    Losing Pollard didn't help.
