KWD, there's at least one other DrumChatter who's built his own cajon...if you like, I can get the two of you together so you can compare notes! Thinking of having the other guy build me a cajon, so there may be a third cajon player in our ranks soon...

Hi BB, hopefully he did a better job than I...or at least the guy I had cut my plywood. He used a circular saw and just didn't do a very good job of driving it. None of the sides on the panels are very straight and it doesn't seal that well, thus the sound it produces is less than impressive. I keep thinking I should pull it apart, re-cut it (properly) and put it back together.
I'd be quite interested to hear how the othe chap made his...
I really do love the sound a decent Cajon and was pleasantly surprised to see one come out on American Idol the other night.

Although not in playable condition, I do have a set of bongos that I rescued from a music store that went under when the owner passed away. They are missing the block that goes between them and holds them together, which I suppose I will just make on my own and then refinish it along with the shells.

None! And it is killing me, well maybe just hurting! I had a great Meinl djembe, traded it in on some cymbals. Then I bought a Remo Leon Mobley djembe. Traded it in to help fund Claire's kit (worth it, that kit is a blast!) Now I really miss having a djembe! It is on the buy soon list, as is a tongue drum for Claire.

I'm a newbie to this site but I wanted to jump in on this...let's see: 5 conga's: 2 tumba's, 1 conga, 2 quinto's. 2 sets of bongo's (one wood, one fiberglass, c'mon!) 1 Tahitian pahu tupa'i (from tahiti w/ a goat skin head), 1 Hawaiian pahu.
none! LOL
My Kit - Mapex Saturn 6 Pc., Iron Cobra Double Pedal, 14 Sabian HHX Evolution HH, 20 Avedis Ping Ride, Zildjian 16 Vintage Crash, Zildjian K 17 Thin Dry Crash, Sabian HHX Evolution 16 Crash, Evans Heads, Sennheiser Mikes
I have two authentic djembes full size. Five half size djembes for teaching purposes and a regular drum set. I would like to have a good dumbek and a set of bongos and a set of assorted tone cowbells.

Hey, Rich! Welcome aboard...sounds like you have enough djembes for a drumline of your own, man! Do you specialize in world-beat hand drumming--seems to me you do; it's cool to see that more and more people are getting into it...

I have one small darbuka. I love it.

i own one of those drum box things i can't think of what it's called
I have 7 hand drums:
Four Valje Congas, a pair of Valje Bongos and a black fiberglass “Toad” conga. The Toad is a cheap drum compared to the Valje’s but it sounds not too bad for a $200 drum.
All the Valje drums are made of Red Oak – air dried and scored stave construction made by the late great Tom Flores in Los Angeles California around 1975/76 – I bought them new in 1976.
Bongo sizes
6 3/4" and - 8"
Congas are 31 inches deep
Quinto - 10 1/4"
Conga - 11 1/4"
Tumba - 12 1/4"
Super Tumba – 13 1/4"
Will sell them for $10,000 lol ………not !

Actually, as we speak, there is a fellow conga player that is setting up to buy my congas for my asking price (not $10,000 by the way). I had them for sale last year and I just could not go through with it - I backed out at the last minute. I thought he'd be really upset but he understood. Well, a year has gone by and I'm at the place in my life where it may be time to sell them. He's getting the $$$$ together and getting back to me. Ya - know - they're only drums I keep telling myself. But, what a history Valje has had and I was a part of it (not from the begining in the 50's - I wish) for 32 years (1976). If I back out this time he's going to take a contract out on my I think.
Cheers (again)
Kona - That's me and my Valje's in Kelowna, BC Canada 1978.......sad to say - the drums have weathered time better than me.......it sucks gettin old. "Getting old is not for whimps!"
