A coworker said Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts used the same head on his snare for 14 years. Anyone heard of this? Sounds a little far-fetched to me.

I like the Stones' sound, and Charlie Watts was a big part of that. Good drummers know how to play to the needs of the band. I think Charlie watts did that well.

As a novice I've always wondered why one needs to hit hard when you can electronically amplify it?

I have heard the same thing about Charlie for not changing heads. Charlie is a capable and good drummer who plays what is appropriate for the song. I sometimes think there is as much art in restraint as there is in monster chops. I know I read where Neil Peart met him last year in Canada for the first time and said he was awe struck by him and was at loss for words becasue they ran in to each other back stage at a music festival and Neil was not expecting to meet him. But he said that Charlie was one of his heros and plays time like a metronome. He is also a trained and respected jazz drummer who gigs around england when not performing with the stones. I respect what he does!
