Yeah, since it showed up all of a sudden, and then got worse, you might want the check the snares. The knob on the snare throw is used to tighten them, so you might try that to see if it makes it better. If so, then you'll need to tighten something that holds the snare wires in place, and we can talk about that if this turns out to be the problem.

Of course, the other possibility is that your ears are getting better at picking up all the various sounds that the snare is making, and you are hearing an overtone. If so, then CC's suggestion about a dampening ring, or Moongel is right on.

Maybe a tunning rod problem, perhaps it is lossening on you and causing adverse head tunning. Set the drum on the carpet and tap lightly around the perimeter of the top head and make sure your lugs are tightend evenly. As you tap around the head if you find a detuned lug it will sound different from the others and if all are okay on the top head remove the snare wires and repeat with the bottom head with the drum set on its top head on the carpet. The reason for doing that is that you don't want the other head interfering with the head you are trying to tune. Then reinstall the snares and adjust them. Start with one thing at a time and work through that until you find the source of your problem

If its a tuning problem ,could be where you keep your drums . Its always better to keep them in a bed room or a den or family room . Drums dont like drastic changes in temperature like you would have if you kept them in your barn or un-heatted garage or a damp basement . Good luck.

Hey Gonefishin, it's good to see you! I would ask what you've been up to, but then you were probably "gonefishin!" LOL

make sure the tuning rods on the top and bottom are all tuned properly, make sure the snares are not overtightened, and if all looks good, maybe lower the tension on the top(batter head)as well as the reso bottom head, if you are still getting that ring, try a little piece of moongel, but the other recommendations should take care of it.

check the muffle, you know, the little knob, on the side, that controls that pad that touches the batter head

I had the same problem, make sure that pad has tension on the batter head, in my experience, i had to crank this little knob as far as it could go, made my snare sound amazinga

sounds like you might need some muffling then like the gafo tape or muffle ring

my snare starts to do this when the batter side head begins to loosen
sometimes even a lug will be movable by finger
try tuning it and see where that gets you
