and i use a remo emperor for my snare head

Hey everyone, newby here.Just bought a set( pearl vision) and the sound doesn't seem right. The heads that came with are pearl protone.I have them set in my basement which is finished but not very big.I played around with tuning but no luck there. So I'm thinking maybe its the heads.I like a deeper rock sound(metallica etc.).So most people think remo, what would you reccommend? And is there any website where you can hear a difference between the different head sounds of a single manufacturer?Don't quite understand tthe difference between warm, open, bright so please keep reply's easy to understand for newby. Thanks

I have a Pearl Vision with the original Pearl heads and they actually sound pretty good. Even similar to the Remo Emperors I have on my old export. (they may actually be made by remo, does anyone know?) They are a 2 ply head which is better than what you get on most kits at that price. I get a nice, deep rock sound out of them.
If it helps, I have the batter heads fairly lose, and the resonant heads just a bit tighter.
So I'd say unless you don't mind forking out for a new set of heads, spend a bit more time playing with the tuning, maybe try them out in a bigger room and see if you can get a better sound from them.
thanks for the advice,I just spent the better part of the day on youtube learning how to retune my heads,I think they were too loose. They do sound better and until I get a better ear for drumming maybe I'll stick wth these for now.
My Pearl Export also came with Protones, I got them to sound pretty good, but now that I have an Emperor on one tom the other two sound bad by comparison. The Pinstripe is probably the sound you're looking for.
Hi Drummerguy, welcome back!
Glad to hear about the new kit. As to the site with sound, I couldn't find that for you, I am including the Remo, and Evans sites for you. Just remember that the more "open" a head sounds the higher the pitch. "Warm" would indicate a lower pitched tone, while "fat" would be lower yet. When you get to "fat" you are usually talking about edge control (the higher pitched "overtones" come from the edge of the drumhead), so The Remo Pinstripe, or the Evans EC (Edge Control) heads are the choices for the "fat" sound. This would be the sound that was popular in the '70's if you need to figure out the sound that you want. The coated heads will warm up the sound of the head, with a single ply coated head being less "warm" than a 2 ply coated head. The single ply heads, like the Protones that are undoubtedly on your kit now, are the most "open" heads, so you get that higher pitched ring after the initial strike of the drumhead.
I hope this helps Drummerguy.

BTW, here is an excellent resource for you to learn some of the basics: http://store.drumbum.com/Links.html
And here's a good one for learning how to tune the drums: http://www.drumsdatabase.com/tuning-drums.htm I really like the "Drum Tuning Bible."

when tuning my sanre i wanted that deep sound too i found using duct tape helped dammen the sound. love the sound. it helps as well that its an evans centre dot snare head, very good head for a heavy hitter like me
Got to stop hitting my self in the face with those drumsticks!!
I think that Pearl Exports come with single ply heads.
I know that the Visions have 2 ply heads.
I think they want the vision to be quite a step up from the export.
They market the vision as being inspired by the masters series and it does have better quality shells and hardware. They also claim that no other brand can match the quality and features of the Vision for the same price. It is still made in China though.
I won mine so I think it was great value for money!!!
Sorry if that sounded like an ad.
Holy, it just like Funky said on another thread, Gretsch was beating their brains out with the Catalina series, so if Pearl was going to continue to compete in the intermediate arena, they had to do something. That something as Vision, and it appears that Pearl has done well.

I am not a Pearl fan overall. No reason really, it is kind of like car guys, my family grew up driving GM vehicles and I still do even though Ford and Dodge make good vehicles as well, not to mention the very good qualitiy (often superior) vehicles manufactured overseas. I had an occasion to look at a vision set recently and was impressed by the build quality and overall look. It was a really nice kit. I didn't play it but I am sure it sounded really good too. My point is once again there just isn't any what I would consider junk coming out from the drum manufactures anymore. It is all good quality stuff from what I can see. I better qualify that by saying that I mean from a semi to pro level kit. And the line betwen semi pro and pro is becoming thinner by the day. There doesn't seem to be much difference anymore really other than exotic veneers and finishes.
