Matt
HEy guys, sorry for making another thread... but I wanted to make sure the final version of the snare horse had its own thread.
After many tries, and some interesting results... I finally found the finshed product.
This thing is so cool!!
Its strong, stable, easy to handle and does EXACTLY what I wanted it to do.
I could not be more pleased with this final out-come.
(Previously written explanation for this creation)
Ok...
First things first...
Im not trying to re-invent the wheel.
Nor am I trying to make a product that I can market.
If you like this set up, feel free to ask me exactly what components are involved, and I will make you a list.
I am trying to solve a problem that has been bothering me for years.
Actually, a couple problems.
1) I hit very hard, and this causes my snare stand to walk as I play. Even though I use the heaviest stand made.
2) Im very picky about snare drum placement. I need it to be in the same place, everytime I set up.
3) The most comfortable position of my snare, puts the main vertical piece of the snare stand, very close to my double bass pedal connecting rod.
So... when my snare stand starts to walk, it ends up, pushed up against the connecting rod.
The set up I have come up with is BY FAR the most simple of many configurations I have been working on. Although some of them look much cooler and more high tech than this one... this one is the most practical.
This is a Tama "air ride" stand, from the road pro series. I must say, I have spent years NOT being a fan of Tama.. but the past few pieces, this one included, have impressed me greatly with their design and high quality.
This stand has a much longer boom than my DW 9000 series stand. Which gives me the ability to move the base of the stand very close to me, and still keep the drum at a comfortable distance.
However, if this stand were set up this way... with the star cast rim mount facing me, instead of the other way... the stand would fall over. It needs to be attatched to the base of the throne.
This set up is very solid. The drum has some flex to it that it would not using a conventional stand... but nothing that would bother me.
With the snare removed from the stand (which is quick and easy) and the seat removed from the throne, the set up is pretty light and not too hard to handle.
Because the main angle adjustment on the tama stand is a "ball" type... the positioning of the drum is super simple and easy to get it where you want it.
I chose to put the star cast rim mount facing me for two reasons.
1) This makes it possible to have no tri-pod base anywhere near my pedals or connecting rod. If I set this snare stand up the way it was intended, I would be right back at square one....
2) The gap between my rack tom and snare needs to be very small. Im used to having them within a fraction of an inch of eachother. I dont want to change that. Again, if I used this stand and rims mount the way they were intended, it would create a pretty big gap between the two drums. (Snare and tom)
So far, I dont mind having the star cast mount between my legs and facing me. Its not in my way. Also, it sits below the actuall rim of the drum, so it does not interfere with rim shots.

Thanks guys...
Someone just sent me a pic of the new gibraltar piece this morning.(2008 model)
Its pretty cool.
I like mine better (without having tried theirs, obviously) for three reasons.
1) Mine has a free floating, or air ride system for the snare.
2) Mine connects to the seat... and while not everyone has a rack... EVEYONE has a seat!!! LOL.
3) Mine is cooler... because I made it!
Here is the Gibraltar piece.

The finshed version looks quite a bit like the very first drawing I made a few weeks ago.
Ive tried about 10 different set-ups, and then went back to the original idea of a rim mount type application.

Are you going to get a patent for this?

GREAT JOB *FANTASTIC*
I definatly would patent that if i were you, i mean, what are you gonna lose
Just as long as theirs some advantage over a regular stand
You should definately market this, bro. It's an awesome idea with tremendous results. Great work, Matt.

awesome job, but what I really admire is your patience.....from experience I know that trying to "jimmy-rig" a final product from a bunch of parts can be exasporating...especially when you have a good idea of what you want but the key piece is almost always missing.....very well thought out product...and i could use one...lol
cheers
