    Default Stupid/Crazy Idea

Okay, so recently I destroyed an old snare, it wasn't a name brand or anything, so it's not a big wound to me, but I'm going to replace it. I had an idea, it might seem crazy and some of you will probably pan me for this, but I'm taking an old 60's Ludwig rack tom and converting it into a 12'' snare. I'll have pictures when I'm done.
    It's a classic.

Not going to pan you. Just ask you to consider before you cut........... What color is the Luddy?

It's an orange sparkle, here's a picture of the full kit.

The tom I'm converting is not the tom pictured here, it's the same size and everything it's just I don't have a use for a second 12'' rack tom on the same set, and I need a snare because I can't split the snare between two sets any longer.

Hey, no panning from here JD. Anything is fair game. The very worst that can happen is that it just doesn't work out (all great innovators go through it). The best that can happen is that you get a great snare, and Drum Chatters give you a verbal pat on the back for a job well done! Hope it goes well JD.

jd, the saying goes, "Necessity is the mother of invention." (Sorry, it was not Frank Zappa who said it!)

If you don't need the extra tom, but need the extra snare, give it a try...since wood snares seem to be making a comeback, you might come up with a killer snare!
keep the beat goin' ... Don't keep it to yourself!

Yup, it's 12x8. Here are a few pictures of my work so far, it wasn't anything hard, just had to drill two holes.

And if anyone was curious, here's the badge.

I need to buy the hoops-one snare side and one not-and I'm going to need to buy a smaller strainer, I'm thinking 10 inches or so. Heads are a given, but all together, it's going to cost me around $60 dollars to finish this project.

Oh, that saying is very true, and it was Plato who said that. The toms on this set have strange mounts and I couldn't find the proper mounting hardware so if anyone noticed, the tom mount on that kit is one of my clever hybrids. I took off the claw of a snare stand and put it on a cymbal boom arm. It's pretty cool, haha.

So today I ordered the hoops and wires over eBay and tomorrow we're going to get the heads and the tension rods. So in about a week you should see a finished snare.

Looks really good. Can take the loud drums really well for a condensor. Bi directional with a hi end.... or was it low end scoop on it :>
