    Default Mounting China Cymbals

    Hey all

    Yesterday I got a new China Cymbal, a Zildjian A Custom 20".

I was wondering, since I completely lack experience with China Cymbals, what the general consensus is on how to mount them?

I have decided to mount mine upside down, with the edges curling away from me. It seems to sound livelier and more powerful.

Also, I know it sounds silly so I wanted to get some input on this, but I'm a bit concerned with hitting the China when its the right way up because with edges flanging upwards, it seems it might crack easily.

Any experienced China players out there who can give me some info?

    Cheers

About hittin' it at the edge which flanging upwards is not a problem...Coz when I played China in studio I always beat it the way like that....

Its better to mount it upside down so the edge won't chip off the stick

    definitely mount it upside down.

some like to mount it upside down and keep it a bit raised and to the right of the ride cymbal. Like at the height of your crash cymbals. (on a right handed kit)

another popular place to put a big china like that is on a 4 piece kit just to the right of the tom tom and level with the tom tom. again the china would be mounted upside down. i prefer putting big chinas in a position like this and like to put smaller chinas near the height of my crash cymbals. by putting the big china in this lower position you feel like your riding on the floor tom when you play it!

I'm grateful for this thread. I have mounted my 18" china both ways, and I've been having a hard time deciding which way I liked best. Right now I have it right side up again, because it seems to ring out more when it's right side up. I have been concerned about hitting the edge too hard, though, so it's nice to see that others have a reason for mounting it upside down.

    Thanks for the input everyone!

Its staying upside down for the time being I reckon. Like you mentioned koopa, its above and slightly to the right of my Ride at the moment, about the same height as the Crashes. Aside from how great it sounds, I think it looks awesome too

    2+ years later...

I always thought of the China cymbal being more of a gong than a cymbal that should be mounted upside down.
