A Q about hi-hats

hey!
I'm just wondering how much higher do the hi-hats have to be from the snare?? mine is kinda low... i've noticed Ringo's is pretty high! does it have to be an exact hight... or can it vary from person to person...?

It varies from person to person. Just go with what you're comfortable with

It really is Up to you & how It all works ,I myself have always
have them at 1'" higher then My snare But then I have all My Drums Very Very Close so I can move around them in A very Flexible comfortable Fassion.
But its all good what ever you Feel..

Try different ways ,it sure

i find the lower the better without them causing an obstruction if their too close you might catch your stick on them, but whatever works, Skins

Too low and I'm constantly hitting my wrist with the stick. Too high and it makes it more effort to play those disco style 16th grooves with hat. It's a personal thing I think, as is all drum set configuring. I see some and think, How on earth does the guy play those?

as i am learning to play more open handed stuff, mine are getting lower. they are about 5-6 inches higher now.

I've got mine at about 5-6" higher too. It gives me enough room for the crossed over left hand to do it's thing. As KG indicated, I hate beating up my left wrist because the hats are too low.

I guess clearance for crossing your arm over is the factor here-
I got tired of the crossover, and moved my hat to the center of the kit where the height isn't that critical anymore. I like them low now, and can reach them with both hands without ever having to cross arms. Me likey.
Requires a remote/cable hat, but it was well worth the investment to me.

Mine are about 5" or 6" too. It boils down to simple ergonomics for me I don't want to hit my wrist when I cross over, and I don't want them too high that I take a chance of stubbing my stick and dropping it when moving from snare to hats or around the kit. Just set them where you comfortable.

I used to have mine quite low... I'm not sure why, I recently raised them up to about 6" above the snare and it has really helped my technique. Once again, I'm not sure why.

Keep in mind, that it is all relative to the height that your snare is set to as well. For all you know, I have my snare at eye level...
