Hi and welcome to drum chat. What do you mean by "sense"?
i understand what u saying placid, before u drum, first of all train or practice psychologically, note all the styles u ve originated from that training. And listen to not just drummers, singers and everybody involved in a piece of music u like. By this u are acquiring a sense of music coordination and arrangement of sound.

you can take lessons and be active in Music Theory (maybe take a few classes) also know what the role is of each instrument around you- a drummers job is to keep the pulse and be the backbone of the song and fill when neccessary (generally speaking)

by sense I would think that they want to know the basic knowledge of everything having to so with drumming and what the role of the drummer is...then go into depth with it
