Modern jazz defines a pretty broad spectrum. Here are some of the guys I like:

    Miles Davis
    Ornette Coleman
    Bela Fleck
    Allan Holdsworth
    Mike Stern
    Bob Berg
    Dave Weckl Band
    Tribal Tech
    Vital Information
    Chick Corea
    John Scofield
    Frank Gambale
    Yellowjackets

depends what instrumentation and style you like really, If you like sax check out courtney Pine , his drummer is mark mondesuir,Like his style a lot, The Yellow jackets with will kennedy is hot especially the recording with 'take 6' the vocal group thats some great stuff. The list is endless dude. I will put a link up from youtube on a well known ditty called 'the chicken' the weckle band do a nice job on this one. also check out 'Got a match' by chick corea electirc band with dave weckle. If you like Guitar I would recommend eric Johnson. I found a real intersesting one though, has anyone heard of tommy emmanuel the guitar player? bet you didnt know he is also a good drummer.
